InVISIBLE: We Were Here. We Are Here.
A collaborative exhibition by Deb Gardiner, Deb Findlay, Frank Golding, Kerri Wilson McConchie, and Rebecca Russell, with Ember Parkin and David McGinniss
25 Nov - 10 Dec, Art Space Ballarat
It is forty years since the Ballarat Children’s Home on Victoria Street closed its doors in 1983. More than 4,500 children once lived there – in its various names, Orphan Asylum or Orphanage or Children’s Home. Their lives are forever part of this city’s story. Lives controlled by adults with low expectations and too easy to cast judgment. Yet here they are.
This multimedia exhibition brings together artists who spent childhoods in confinement in Ballarat, separated from their families and communities. It is a powerful statement of resistance, persistence, and presence, exploring themes of freedom found through escape, survival in the face of shattered childhoods, and the liberating experience of speaking back to the unreliable records of institutional childhoods.
inVISIBLE is open 11am - 4pm, Thu to Mon.
Art Space Ballarat is located at 14 Lydiard St N, Central Ballarat.
This project has been assisted by the Australian Government through the Australia Council for the Arts, its arts funding and advisory body. Supported by Cafs Ballarat.
