Collaborating to tell the histories of 4,000+ children

for City of Ballarat

The site of the former Ballarat Orphan Asylum, Ballarat Orphanage, and Ballarat Children’s Home lay dormant for 10+ years after it was purchased by private developers. Ashtree have been collaborating closely with a working group of past-’inmates’ of the institutions to guide the heritage interpretation and story telling that will take place at the site.

Through research and facilitating collaboration, Ashtree developed a heritage interpretation guide. We have since been re-engaged to collaborate with past residents on detailed text and image selection for storytelling on the site, and progressing into detailed design. The site was home to over 4,000 children, and among them there were a broad and diverse range of experiences and memories of this place.
